In this netsuke the primary figure has just "Cast the Beans", in a festival celebrating the arrival of spring. The child on his shoulder would appear to be, not an ordinary child but a Nio or good spirit, (an Oni Demon spirit is shown with two horns), as they hope for good luck in the new year, while checking to see which way the winds might have directed their seeds.
